Nuclear reactions feed the stars throughout their lives while producing all the chemical elements that surround us, including those that are indispensable for life as we know it, such as carbon or oxygen.

I will present how these reactions may be reproduced in the laboratory and how they are deeply connected to specific structures of the nuclei. Among these reactions, the knowledge of the carbon+carbon fusion probability at thermonuclear energies will be discussed, which is one of the biggest nuclear astrophysics challenges.
