Gildas Lemonnier

I am an engineer specialized in scientific field missions, from the data collection, data preparation, to the management of a research station. My aim is to organize and plan high quality field studies, taking into account specificities of each mission such as duration, people involved, isolation, specific field techniques needed, and how to obtain the needed samples and sample sizes.

I spend every year several months at the Succulent Karoo Research Station (SKRS) in South Africa for the Striped Mouse Project. I am in charge of the research and technical management of the research station, from training people to running the respirometry laboratory. At the DEPE, I am involved in several other local field studies in Alsace (great tits, exotic turtles…) where I use my technical skills to track, catch or handle wild animals.

Techniques used

- Capture – In the field, it’s essential to think about the most accurate
technique to catch the animal I target (mist nets, traps…)

- Sampling – In a field study, the data I collect can be morphological data (mass, length…) or various samples like blood, feathers or smells.

- Tracking – If I want to track a study model on the field, I use several techniques more or less invasive (telemetry, PIT-tagging, photo-identification…)
