The formation of culture in animal societies, including humans, relies on the social transmission of information among individuals in a group. While the cognitive capacities for social information transmission are present in a wide range of animals, culture has only been described for handful of species. My research aims to understand the constraints on the evolution of culture by identifying the individual-level characteristics that prevent information transmission through groups of wild baboons.
