The causes and consequences of individual variation in metabolic rate

Last update: : Thursday 30 August 2018, by Nicolas Busser

Presented by: Neil Metcalfe, University of Glasgow
Date: Thursday 4th October 2018, 13:00-14:30
Place: Amphithéâtre Marguerite Perey, bâtiment 01

This talk will explore why some individuals have 2-3 times the metabolic rate of others of the same size, age and sex – what are the causes, what are the consequences, and how does this variation persist? It will draw on the work that we have been doing on the links between mitochondrial function and metabolic rate in fish (revealing unexpected patterns relating to the production of Reactive Oxygen Species), and then extend this work into the field to show how metabolic rate is under selection but with different selection pressures in different habitats.
