The museum derives from the remarkable 18th century natural history cabinet of Jean Hermann, a professor of botany, philosophy, ‘medical matters’ and natural history, which was purchased by the City of Strasbourg after his passing. The collections have ever since been tremendously expanded and encompass today some 1.2 million specimens, from all the major taxa and all geographic origins. The presentation will focus on the history of these collections, their scientific value, the design of the present day building, and conclude with the description of the renovation project.
