Animals often use conspicuous visual signals to communicate with conspecifics, but these signals may come at steep costs, such as increased predation risk. A few animal groups appear to mitigate these costs by using dynamic signals that can be "turned on" only at critical times. Over the past few years, we have been studying dynamic colour change in Neotropical yellow toads to understand the costs and benefits of this signal, as well as the mechanisms driving the change in colour.
