The optimal shapes of atomic nuclei : application to the
fission process

Résumé :

The possibility to describe the sequence of shapes which a nuclear system attains during the fission process, in particular the scission configuration, or in fusion-fission reactions is presented. This approach is based on the minimization of the liquid drop energy under the constraints that fix the mass (particle number) and the deformation of the nucleus. Such a method does not rely on any shape parameterization and leads to the shapes with the lowest energy. The results for the calculated fission barrier heights of heavy nuclei demonstrate a good agreement with the experimental data.
