Résumé :

Heat transfer analysis and thermal imaging provides new opportunities for estimating the metabolic rate and energy expenditure of both captive and free ranging animals. Recent data collected on harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) during the moult in Scotland and on emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) in Antarctica will be presented to demonstrate how heat transfer analysis can be used to estimate the cost of thermoregulation. The strengths and weaknesses of this approach will be examined to stimulate discussion for further applications.
