Abstract :
The effect of breakup of stable and radioactive weakly bound light nuclei on fusion has been extensively
investigated in recent years. Availability of radioactive ion beams has triggered a good number of
studies to investigate reactions involving unstable nuclei. At Inter University Accelerator Centre
(Formerly Nuclear Science Centre), light radioactive ion beam is produced using in-flight technique,
through (p,n) type reaction in inverse kinematics. The recoil mass separator – HIRA (Heavy Ion reaction
Analyser) was operated in new Ion optics to extract secondary beam (RIBs) from the primary beam.
Using this facility, 7Be beam with purity 99 % and beam spot size 4 mm in the energy
range of
15-22 MeV, has been produced and utilized in a variety of experiments [1]. The present study has
been carried out in order to further investigate the interaction of radioactive nucleus 7Be with another
loosely bound nucleus 9Be in order to look the influence of weakly bound structure. In view of the
similarities of weakly bound stable systems with their associate weakly bound radioactive ones, the
comprehension of the reaction mechanisms induced by intense beams like 6,7Li and
9Be, should be
important for the study of reactions induced by low intensity radioactive ion beams. Status of the facility
as well as the result of our recent experiments for this system will be discussed.
