The LHC opens up the possibility to study particle interactions in a new energy domain. The general purpose experiments ATLAS and CMS at the LHC have a large discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model and in the investigation of the nature of electroweak symmetry breaking. In addition, the large event rates also allow to perform precision measure-ments of important Standard Model parameters.
In the present talk the physics potential in the area of Higgs physics and searches for physics beyond the Standard Model of the LHC experiments is presented. Particular focus is given on the physics studies for ATLAS that can be performed during the first years of running at low luminosity.
